In 1997, The Biblical Recorder recognized New Freedom as 25th in the top 100 Baptist Churches in North Carolina in giving to Missions, with a very high percentage for a small church. On Aug. 1, 1999, New Freedom voted in a new pastor, the Rev. Stephen Burrow of Southern Pines. Members voted unanimous approval of Burrow in a business meeting. Since taking over as new pastor, Burrow has begun implementing the purpose-driven church, a church-building program originated by Rev. Rick Warren at Saddleback Community Church in Lake Forest, CA.
