New Freedom Baptist Mission of Pinehurst, North Carolina, voted in its second pastor on Aug. 1, 1999, the Rev. Stephen Burrow of Southern Pines. Members voted unanimous approval of Burrow in a business meeting.

Burrow has previously served as pastor of Bolivia Baptist in Bolivia, N.C.; Harmony Baptist in Bunnlevel, Lemon Springs Baptist in Lemon Springs, and as interim pastor of First Baptist of Erwin.

Burrow is a native of Troy, N., has a B.A. degree from Mt. Olive College in Mt. Olive, and is also a graduate of Fruitland Bible Institute of Hendersonville.

Burrow said his goal is for New Freedom Baptist to become a purpose-driven church, a church-building program originated by Rev. Rick Warren at Saddleback Community Church in Lake Forest, CA.

"A purpose-driven church is not driven by the pastor. It is driven by the Word of God. Everything we do must relate to the five purposes of our church:

  1. Worship: "Love God with all your heart."
  2. Ministry: "Love your neighbor as yourself."
  3. Evangelism: "Go…and make disciples."
  4. Fellowship: "Baptizing them…"
  5. Discipleship: "Teaching them to do…"
Burrow concluded, "If you come to New Freedom, we're going to love you. No matter who you are, what you look like, or what you've done, you're going to be loved."
