Bible Q&A: Did God create Himself? August 2, 2001

Bible Question: "I know the Bible says God created everything, but who created God? Did He create Himself?"
Bible Answer: Unfortunately, the Bible says little or nothing about anything that comes before the being of God, so nothing I or anyone else can say will ever definitively answer your question.
The Bible begins with this verse, Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
Note how that verse begins, "In the beginning God…" Before the beginning, God was, so the writer of Genesis, Moses, tells us before the beginning of the heavens and the earth, God was already there.
And we have the full trinity of the Godhead also in Genesis 1, for verse 2 says "And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters." Then verse 3 adds, "Then God said, 'Let there be light,'; and there was light." So there is the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost.
Any reading of the Bible, Old or New Testaments, will quickly reveal Jesus Christ is the literal Word of God, so when God "said" in the beginning, His spoken Word was Jesus Himself in the creation.
John 1:1 says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John continues in 1:14, "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth."
Obviously, this is John's introduction to the life of Jesus Christ.
And Paul adds in Colossians 1:15, speaking of Jesus, "He is the image of the invisible God, firstborn of all creation." So before the creation of anything that now exists, Jesus Christ was "firstborn."
We cannot see "the invisible God," but He made Himself visible through Jesus when "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us."
And Col. 1:16 adds, "For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions, or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him."
But that's about as far as we can go in answering your question. We have no Scripture to tell us where God came from, and whether He created Himself, or anything before "In the beginning God…"
The best we can do is insure we have made His Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord, and when we get to heaven, we can ask Him.
