Bible questions and answers by John Myers, Internet Photojournalist Bible Question: "Will there ever be peace in the Mideast? Does the Bible say if the Arabs and the Jews will ever live together in peace?"

Bible Answer: Yes, the Bible says there will one day be peace in the Mideast, but only when the Prince of Peace Himself brings it.

Isaiah 9:6 gives us several names for the Messiah, who is the Lord Jesus Christ, including the last name He is called, "Prince of Peace."

The next verse describes what will happen when the Lord Jesus returns to set up His earthly reign, which will begin with 1,000 years of peace on earth: "Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this," Isaiah 9:7.

Since the nation of Israel was founded in 1948, this new nation for the Jewish people has been on a more or less constant war footing, and has fought two major wars with the surrounding Arabs.

Presidents and other world leaders have attempted to bring peace, and one day the Bible predicts a world leader will arise who will sign a peace treaty that will appear to being peace to the Mideast, but will in fact just be a prelude to the greatest war ever.

Revelation 6:4 describes it: "And another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword."

This world leader who will seem to bring peace but instead will launch the greatest world war in the history of the world is called the Antichrist in the Bible. Many Scriptures in both the Old and New Testaments describe these events involving the Antichrist, too numerous to note here. An entire Bible study can be done on that.

I can recommend several good study books on this topic, two of which are by noted Bible scholar Dr. Tim LaHaye, co-author of the "Left Behind" series. LaHaye's "Revelation Unveiled" and "Are We Living in the End Times?" are excellent study books on this topic.

But let me quote just one Scripture about the last terrible battle called Amargeddon that will be fought in the nation of Israel in the valley of Jezreel, which will be ended with the return of Jesus Christ.

"And the winepress was trampled outside the city, and blood came out of the winepress, up to the horses' bridles, for one thousand, six hundred furlongs," Revelation 14:20 says.

A furlong is an eighth of a mile, so 1,600 furlongs would be 200 miles. The whole nation of Israel is not much longer than 200 miles, so what Revelation is describing is a great battle with blood flowing from its victims for 200 miles up to the depth of a horses' bridle, or about four feet deep, stretching virtually the whole length of Israel.

Only after that great conflagration will peace finally come to the Mideast, and then and only then will Jew and Arab and all the rest of the nations of the world lay down their arms and war no more again.
