The "PHOTO" in Photojournalism

Photos and Text by John Myers, Internet Photojournalist

Chicken Feed Mill  Take another ordinary scene, a chicken feed processing plant, two bare concrete towers rising out of the rural Sandhills landscape of Moore County at the Perdue Farms site near Pinehurst, NC.

Or as one newspaper scribe dubbed this edifice upon spying this imposing concrete prominence as he was passing through -- "The Eiffel Tower of the Sandhills." See how the right words, combined with the right image, can indeed transform the ordinary.

Frame this hum-drum scene in the warm tones of the afternoon sun -- and set your exposure to emphasize the sky and throw the buildings into a darkened outline -- and again a pleasing image is created, transforming the ordinary into the interesting.

(I just gave away the exposure setting of one of my "trade secrets" for shooting sunrises and sunsets. But don't try it with your "automatic" camera.)
