N.C. Concealed Carry Handgun Classes

What: The N.C. Concealed Carry Handgun Class is required by North Carolina law for all applicants for a concealed-carry handgun permit. Certificate of class completion must be presented to your local sheriff's office when you apply for your permit. Local sheriff's offices set application fees and times applications are accepted. Call your local sheriff's office for information about fees and application times available.

How Much: Class fee is $100 for students who bring their own handgun and 50 rounds of ammunition. For an additional $10, you can use a .22LR semi-automatic pistol and 50 rounds of ammo supplied by instructor.

When: Available 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by appointment only for one or more students at a time, up to a maximum of 10.

Where: 8 a.m. to noon, classroom instruction in the home of John Myers, 2020 Pinedale Road, Rockingham, NC. Call 910-419-9806 or 910-995-3975 for directions.

  • From 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., live-fire instruction at DeWitt's Outdoor Sports, 443 Jimmy Carriker Road, Ellerbe, NC 28338. Telephone at range complex, 910-652-2926.

    Who: NRA-certified Instructor John Myers will teach the class. To register 910-419-9806 or 910-995-3975.

    If you purchase ammo, for an additional $10 you can use your choice of of concealed-carry revolvers or semi-automatic pistols supplied by instructor.

    Instructor-provided handguns include your choice from among the following revolver options:

  • .22LR single-action pistol.
  • .32 Long/.327 Magnum double-action revolver with Crimson Trace Lasergrips.
  • .38 Special double-action revolver.
  • .44 Special/.44 Magnum single-action or double-action revolver.
  • Full-size, compact and subcompact semi-automatic pistol choices include double-action/single-action, single-action-only or double-action-only, caliber choices:
  • .22LR, 9mm, .357 Sig, 10mm or .45 ACP. Sorry, no .380 ACP or .40S&W available.

    What to bring: Any caliber handgun, 50 rounds of ammo, eye protection (safety goggles or eye glasses) and ear protection (ear plugs or ear muffs). Ear plugs and safety glasses will be available for those who do not have their own.

    NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course

    What: The NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course teaches the basic knowledge, skills and attitude for owning and operating a defensive handgun safely and effectively. This course is 8 hours with 4 hours of classroom and 4 hours of live-fire range time. You will learn to safely and effectively shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. You can be a beginner or an experienced shooter. The class will be individualized to fit all students' needs.

    When: Available 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by appointment only. I will schedule a class when I'm available for one or more students at a time, up to a maximum of 10.

    Note: If you wish to use instructor's revolvers or pistols for the class, you must contact John Myers in advance to arrange for use of his handguns and/or ammo.

    What to Bring to Class:

    1. Semi-automatic pistol or revolver and 50 rounds of the correct caliber ammunition for your handgun. Ammunition should be Full-Metal-Jacket (FMJs) or Frangible range type.
    2. No live ammo allowed in the classroom! You are encouraged to bring your handgun into the classroom at 8 a.m., but be absolutely sure it is unloaded and leave all ammo in your vehicle until we go to the range for the afternoon live-fire portion of the class.
    3. Ear and eye protection. Ear protection should be ear muffs or ear plugs. Eye protection should be shooting glasses or safety glasses or if you wear prescription glasses, safety goggles that will fit over your glasses. Ear plugs and safety glasses will be available from instructor.
    4. Snack or sandwich for lunch if desired. We will have a short break for lunch if you wish to purchase a sandwich locally. Bring soft drinks or water in a cooler for the firing range.
    5. Payment for the class may be in cash or check, $90 if you bring your own handgun and ammo, additional fees as listed above if you use the instructor's handguns.

    Students will receive the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination, and receive a NRA Basic Pistol Shooting course certificate upon satisfactory completion of the course.
