Most of the alleyways begin something like this, leading down a passage from the middle of the blocks, not between blocks where one would expect alleyways.

That climbing vine with the purple blossoms is bougainvillea, sort of like kudzu but with pretty flowers.

If you've ever read a Southern novel, the story probably includes mansions with bougainvillea vines climbing up a trellis.

As you follow on down the alleyway, there's no telling what you will find in the open courtyards that beckon you on forward.
